ConEd weatherization program in New York State - Attic Air Sealing

What Is Weatherization?

If your home feels cold on winter mornings, hot during summer afternoons, or drafty throughout the year, the problem may not be your heating or cooling system. In many homes across Westchester County and the surrounding New York and New Jersey suburbs, the real issue is poor weatherization.

Home weatherization is the process of sealing air leaks and improving insulation so your home holds comfortable indoor temperatures and wastes less energy. It typically includes air sealing, attic insulation, wall insulation, and crawl space improvements, plus a home energy assessment to pinpoint where your home loses the most energy. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, air leaks alone can account for 25–40% of the energy used to heat and cool a typical home — which is why weatherization often delivers noticeable savings and comfort gains.

What Does Weatherization Mean?

At Metro NY Insulation, we regularly meet homeowners frustrated by high energy bills, uneven temperatures, and rooms that never feel comfortable no matter how often they adjust the thermostat. The good news: most of these problems can be fixed with proper weatherization — often without major renovations.

Weatherization is the work of improving your home’s building envelope — the barrier of walls, attic, floors, and foundation that separates conditioned indoor air from the outdoors. In plain terms, it keeps the air you’ve paid to heat or cool inside, and keeps outdoor air out.

Older homes throughout Westchester County — and across Rockland, Orange, Dutchess, Ulster, and Sullivan counties in New York, plus Bergen, Essex, Passaic, and Hudson counties in New Jersey — were often built before modern energy-efficiency standards existed. As a result, they leak significant amounts of air through the attic, walls, crawl spaces, and other hidden gaps. Weatherization closes those gaps and brings older homes closer to modern performance.

Weatherization vs. Insulation: What’s the Difference?

Homeowners often use these terms interchangeably, but they aren’t the same thing. Insulation is one material component — it slows the transfer of heat. Weatherization is the overall strategy for making a home more efficient and comfortable, and insulation is just one tool within it. A complete weatherization plan usually combines:

  • Air sealing
  • Insulation (attic, wall, crawl space)
  • Moisture management
  • Ventilation improvements
  • A home energy assessment

Adding insulation without first air sealing is like putting on a sweater with the windows open — which is why the two are done together.

Common Signs Your Home Needs Weatherization

Your home may benefit from weatherization if you notice:

  • Rooms that are consistently hotter or colder than others
  • Drafts near windows, doors, or electrical outlets
  • High heating and cooling bills
  • Ice dams forming on the roof in winter
  • Hot, stuffy upstairs rooms in summer
  • Cold floors above a crawl space or unheated basement
  • An HVAC system that seems to run constantly
  • Noticeable temperature swings throughout the day

These symptoms usually point to air leakage and insufficient insulation working together.

What’s Included in Home Weatherization?

Air Sealing

Air sealing closes the gaps and cracks where conditioned air escapes and outdoor air sneaks in. Common trouble spots include attic penetrations (around pipes, wires, and chimneys), recessed lighting, plumbing and electrical openings, basement rim joists, and crawl space openings. Air sealing is usually the first and most cost-effective step in any weatherization project.

Attic Insulation

The attic is often the single largest source of energy loss in a home, because heat rises and escapes straight through the roof. Proper attic insulation reduces heat loss in winter, reduces heat gain in summer, evens out room-to-room temperatures, and lowers heating and cooling costs.

Wall Insulation

Many older homes have little or no insulation inside their exterior walls. Dense-pack cellulose insulation can be installed through small access holes, improving comfort and efficiency without tearing open your walls.

Crawl Space Improvements

An uninsulated, vented crawl space can cause cold floors, drafts, and moisture problems. Crawl space encapsulation and air sealing improve comfort, help control energy loss, and reduce the humidity that leads to mold and wood rot.

How Much Does Weatherization Cost?

Cost depends on your home’s size, age, and which improvements it needs — a focused air-sealing and attic project looks very different from a whole-home upgrade. The best way to get an accurate number is a home energy assessment, which identifies exactly which measures will deliver the biggest return for your home. Many New York and New Jersey homeowners also qualify for rebates and incentives (see below) that significantly reduce the out-of-pocket cost.

How Weatherization Helps Year-Round

Many homeowners assume insulation is just for winter. In reality, weatherization works in both seasons. In summer, improved insulation and air sealing help:

  • Reduce heat transfer from a hot attic into living spaces
  • Keep cooled air inside
  • Lower cooling costs
  • Improve temperature consistency between floors
  • Reduce strain on your air conditioning system

This is why many homeowners schedule weatherization in spring or early summer, before peak temperatures arrive — and again ahead of winter heating season.

Home Energy Evaluation - How home energy audits save you money

Should You Start With a Home Energy Assessment?

Yes. A professional home energy assessment (sometimes called a home energy audit) is the smartest first step. Rather than guessing, an assessment reveals where your home is leaking air, insulation gaps and deficiencies, attic and crawl space performance issues, and the upgrades that will deliver the greatest comfort and savings. The results let you prioritize improvements in the right order — and they’re required to access most rebate programs.

Financial Incentives May Be Available

As a participating NYSERDA contractor, Metro NY Insulation helps homeowners understand and access energy-efficiency programs and incentives that can reduce project costs. NYSERDA programs are available to New York homeowners only. New Jersey homeowners may qualify for separate incentives through programs such as Home Performance with ENERGY STAR®. Because programs and eligibility requirements change, it’s best to review your options during your home energy assessment.

Metro NY Insulation’s primary service area is Westchester County, NY, and we serve homeowners throughout the surrounding region:

Frequently Asked Questions

No. Insulation is one material used to slow heat transfer. Weatherization is the broader strategy that combines air sealing, insulation, moisture control, and ventilation to make your whole home more efficient.
Yes. Air sealing and attic insulation reduce heat gain from a hot attic, keep cooled air inside, and ease the load on your air conditioner — improving comfort and lowering cooling bills.
Most residential projects are completed in one to two days, depending on the scope. A home energy assessment is usually completed in a single visit.
The federal Weatherization Assistance Program provides free, income-qualified weatherization for eligible households. NYSERDA programs, by contrast, offer rebates and financing available to a broader range of New York homeowners. We can help you determine which programs you may qualify for.
Drafts, uneven temperatures, high energy bills, ice dams, and cold floors are common signs. A home energy assessment confirms exactly where your home is losing energy.
