Cellulose R-Value — and How Much You Actually Need

Blown cellulose delivers R-3.5 to R-3.8 per inch. Blown fiberglass gives R-2.2 to R-2.7. That difference compounds fast when you are trying to reach a target in a fixed depth of attic.

The DOE recommends R-49 to R-60 for attics in the climate zones covering Westchester and northern New Jersey. Here is what that means in inches:

Depths are settled depths. Loose-fill cellulose settles roughly 15–20% over its first years, so it has to be blown deeper than the finished target. We install to the settled number and leave depth markers so it can be checked years later. Dense-pack in walls is installed at ~3.5 lb/ft³ specifically so it cannot settle and leave a void at the top of the cavity.

The Questions Everyone Asks

Is Cellulose Insulation Safe?

It is made from recycled paper, so people reasonably ask whether it burns, molds, or attracts mice. Here are the straight answers — including where the honest limits are.

Does it burn?

No. The borate treatment gives cellulose a Class A / Class 1 fire rating — the highest available for building insulation. A dense layer actually slows fire spread better than unfaced fiberglass, because the density limits oxygen reaching the framing. It chars rather than supporting a flame.

Does it attract mice or insects?

The opposite. Borate is a natural insecticide and rodent deterrent. Rodents avoid nesting in it where they readily nest in loose fiberglass. Honest limit: it is not a pest-control product and will not clear an existing infestation.

Does it mold?

Borate resists fungal and microbial growth, so the material is not a mold food source under normal conditions. Honest limit: no insulation survives a real water problem. A roof leak or a bath fan venting into the attic will mat it and keep it damp. We fix the moisture source first.

Can it contain asbestos?

No — cellulose has never contained asbestos. The confusion is with vermiculite (often sold as Zonolite), a loose granular insulation that looks like gray-brown pebbles. Vermiculite from Libby, Montana can contain asbestos. Pebbles, not gray shredded fiber? Do not disturb it — have it tested.

Is it dusty? Safe to breathe?

Any dry blown material makes dust during installation, which is why our crew wears respirators and we seal the work area. Once installed and the hatch is sealed, it is inert. It contains no formaldehyde and does not off-gas — and unlike fiberglass it is not itchy or irritating to skin.

What about knob-and-tube wiring?

This one matters in older Westchester homes. Active knob-and-tube must not be buried in any insulation — it is designed to shed heat into open air. If we find it, the wiring gets addressed by an electrician before we insulate. No exceptions.

Energy Assessment

We measure existing depth and R-value, check for moisture, rodents and knob-and-tube, inspect ventilation and soffit clearance, and use thermal imaging to find where heat is actually escaping.

Remove What Has Failed

Wet, matted or contaminated material is vacuumed out and bagged at the source. Sound insulation stays — we do not remove material that is still doing its job just to sell a bigger scope.

Air Seal, Then Blow

Every bypass gets sealed first — top plates, chases, wire penetrations, the hatch. Baffles go in at the eaves so the soffit vents stay clear. Then cellulose goes in to the settled-depth target. See attic air sealing.

Measurement sticks go in so the depth is verifiable years from now, the site is cleaned, and you receive documentation of the installed R-value plus your rebate paperwork.

We blow to the depth that still measures R-49 or better after settling, and leave depth markers so it can be verified later. Dense-pack in walls is installed at about 3.5 lb/ft³ precisely so it cannot settle and leave a void at the top of the cavity.
Cellulose or fiberglass — which is better for an attic?add
For attic floors in this climate, cellulose generally wins: higher R-value per inch, flows around wiring and bracing without gaps, resists air movement far better at density, and borate adds fire and pest resistance. Fiberglass is cheaper per square foot and does not absorb water. Honestly, both installed perfectly are closer than people think — but cellulose is far more forgiving of the irregular framing in older Westchester and NJ homes. Full comparison.
Can cellulose be blown over existing fiberglass?add
Usually yes, and it is often the most cost-effective upgrade available. If the existing fiberglass is dry, uncontaminated and not matted down, cellulose can be blown directly over it and the R-values add together — the existing batts just must not be compressed by the new material. If the fiberglass is wet, rodent-contaminated or dark with filtered dust, it comes out first. Air sealing still has to happen before anything new goes down.
Do you install cellulose in walls without opening them?add
Yes. Dense-pack cellulose goes in through small access holes — either from inside through the drywall, or from outside by removing a band of siding, filling the cavity and restoring the siding. The wall is filled to about 3.5 lb/ft³ so it cannot settle. It is the standard retrofit for older homes with empty or under-filled wall cavities, and it does not require gutting the room.

Yes. New York homeowners working with a NYSERDA participating contractor can receive up to $3,000 toward qualifying insulation and air sealing work.
