Insulation

The full Metro NY Insulation library — everything we’ve written about insulating, air sealing, and fixing the comfort problems in New York and New Jersey homes. Written by the people who do the work, not by a content agency.

Start Here If Something in Your House Feels Wrong

Most homeowners don’t go looking for insulation. They go looking for an explanation — a bedroom that never warms up, a second floor nobody can sleep on in August, a heating bill that keeps climbing, ice dams every February, drafts they can’t locate. Those are all envelope problems, and they usually trace back to the same few places.

How We Approach a Home

Insulation slows heat transfer. It does not stop air from moving. That distinction drives nearly everything we do, and it’s why we assess and air seal before we insulate rather than the other way around. A home energy assessment looks at the attic, the building envelope, the heating system, and the water heater as one connected system — because that’s how a house actually behaves.

Materials, Compared Honestly

There is no single best insulation, only the right material for a specific assembly. Older homes with irregular framing usually call for cellulose; some assemblies are better served by spray foam; many need both in different places.
