Attic after air sealing and blown-in cellulose insulation in Wappingers Falls NY

Attic, Wall and Crawl Space Insulation in Wappingers Falls, NY: Project Case Study

This older Wappingers Falls home was losing heat at every level: a thin, matted layer of fiberglass in the attic, empty wall cavities, and an open crawl space letting cold, damp air in underneath. In October 2026, Metro NY Insulation sealed and insulated the house from top to bottom: we air sealed the attic floor and added blown-in cellulose attic insulation, dense-packed the empty walls through small holes that were patched afterward, and encapsulated the crawl space.

The Problem: Heat Escaping at Every Level

Many older homes in Wappingers Falls and across Dutchess County were built long before insulation codes, and the insulation that was added later has usually settled, shifted or been disturbed. This house had the full set of problems we see across the Hudson Valley.

The attic. The attic floor had a thin, uneven layer of old fiberglass, matted down and pulled apart in places, with open gaps around wiring, pipes and framing. Warm air rises, so every gap in the attic floor is a path for heated air to escape the house. Fiberglass doesn’t stop air on its own, so even the areas that were covered weren’t doing much.

The walls. The exterior walls had little to no insulation in their cavities, which leaves an empty air space between the interior wall and the outside sheathing. Heat passes straight through, and air moves freely inside the wall.

The crawl space. Part of the house sits over a crawl space with open block walls and a loose plastic sheet on the floor. Cold air and ground moisture came in under the house, which makes the floors above cold and pulls damp air up into the living space.

What We Did, Top to Bottom

1. Attic: air sealing, then blown-in cellulose

We sealed the gaps in the attic floor first: around wiring, pipes and the other openings between the living space and the attic. Then we blew in a deep, even layer of cellulose across the whole attic floor. Air sealing comes first because insulation alone doesn’t stop air leaks. Skipping it is the most common reason a re-insulated attic underperforms. Our guide to how much attic insulation you need covers the recommended levels.

2. Walls: dense-pack cellulose with no tear-out

To insulate the walls without opening them up, we drilled a small hole into each wall cavity from inside, filled the cavity with cellulose packed at high density, and patched the holes. Dense-packed cellulose fills the whole cavity, including around wires and blocking, and at that density it also slows air moving through the wall. We used the same approach from outside on this White Plains dense-pack project.

3. Crawl space: encapsulation

In the crawl space, we sprayed foam on the foundation walls and installed a sealed liner across the floor. Together they keep ground moisture and outside air out from under the house, so the floors above stay warmer and the air coming up into the house is drier.

Why We Sealed the Whole House, Not Just the Attic

A house behaves like a chimney in winter. Warm air rises and escapes through gaps at the top, in the attic floor, and that pulls cold air in through gaps at the bottom: the crawl space, the rim joist, and the walls. This is called the stack effect. Fixing only the top or only the bottom reduces it. Sealing and insulating both ends, plus the walls in between, is what makes an older home feel evenly comfortable from room to room.

What Homeowners Typically Notice

  • Fewer drafts and more even temperatures between rooms and floors.
  • Warmer floors over the crawl space.
  • A heating system that runs less, because the house holds the heat it makes.
  • Less risk of ice dams, since less heat reaches the roof. More on that in our guide to ice dam prevention.

NYSERDA Incentives for Dutchess County Homeowners

New York homeowners can receive $2,500–$3,000 through NYSERDA’s Comfort Home program, depending on the package installed: Package A covers the attic and rim joist, and Package B adds walls or a floor above an unheated space. The extra Westchester incentive does not apply in Dutchess County. Metro NY Insulation is a participating NYSERDA contractor and handles the paperwork as part of the project. See our guide to insulation programs and rebates in New York.

(Incentives apply to eligible New York homes. Program terms change, so we confirm current eligibility during your assessment.)

Serving Wappingers Falls and Dutchess County

If your house is drafty, your upstairs and downstairs never feel the same, or your heating bills keep climbing, the cause is usually in the attic, the walls and the crawl space, not the furnace or boiler. Metro NY Insulation is a woman-owned, family-run, BPI-accredited contractor serving Wappingers Falls and the rest of Dutchess County. We start every project with a home energy assessment to find where your home is losing heat.

No. Many homeowners start with the attic, because air sealing and insulating the attic floor usually gives the biggest improvement for the cost. Walls and crawl spaces can follow. Doing the attic, walls and crawl space together, as on this Wappingers Falls project, addresses the stack effect from both ends and usually gives the most even comfort. NYSERDA’s Comfort Home Package B is also built around combining the attic, rim joist and walls or a floor.

Yes. Dense-pack cellulose is installed through small holes drilled into each wall cavity, either from inside or from outside. The cavity is filled at high density and the holes are patched or plugged. No walls are torn out.

Encapsulation seals a crawl space off from the ground and the outdoors. Typically the foundation walls are sealed and insulated, often with spray foam, and a sealed liner is installed over the floor. It keeps cold air and ground moisture from getting into the house through the floor.

Yes. New York homeowners, including in Dutchess County, can receive $2,500–$3,000 through NYSERDA’s Comfort Home program, depending on the package installed. The extra incentive that runs through December 31, 2026 applies to Westchester County only. We confirm what your home qualifies for during the assessment.
